University of Michigan researchers will huddle with members of a community advisory panel tonight to discuss a dioxin-related study in Saginaw and Midland counties.

The 12-member panel will meet at 6 p.m. at Freeland Elementary School, 710 Powley in Tittabawassee Township. The meeting is open to the public.

David Garabrant, a professor of occupational medicine and epidemiology at U-M, is leading a dioxin investigation that examines contamination levels in people's blood, soil and house dust.

He will report today that participation is higher than anticipated in Saginaw and Midland counties.

Nearly 80 percent of eligible households have agreed to interviews. Of those residents, 90 percent have consented to have their blood drawn and soil and dust tested.

Study results are expected in late 2006.

The dioxin study is funded by a $15 million Dow Chemical Co. grant. Garabrant maintains that his research is conducted independent of Dow and will yield scientifically sound data. v
