The New South Wales
Government EPA is overseeing
the remediation of dioxin
contaminated sediment and
residential land at Homebush
Bay near the site of the
Sydney 2000 Olympics.
On land, the top metre must
have no more than 90 parts
per trillion of dioxin. This
is the level that the
remediator submitted was
necessary to protect the
health of children (because
of their relative small body
weight)
In the bay, areas with
significant dioxin
contamination at a depth of
up to 1.5 feet are being
excavated and treated to
reduce the bay wide average
dioxin contamination to
almost 1 part per billion.
The excavated material will
be replaced with clean
material.
The community has generally
accepted use of direct
thermal desorption and
incineration on the basis of
it also having wet scrubbers
and rapid quench to prevent
dioxin formation above the
stack, and with cost savings
being applied to do more
remediation in the bay,
although they preferred
indirect thermal desorption
and base catelysed
dechlorination/destruction.
