Little concern from politicians
Friday, November 18, 2005 Editor, The News:
As a mother and property owner on the Tittabawassee River, I have watched
numerous attempts by politicians to deny the toxicity of the dioxin found along
the river. I have watched them attack the state Department of Environmental
Quality, environmental groups and residents who want this contamination cleaned
up. The one entity that none of these politicians want to point a finger at is
the responsible party, Dow Chemical.
I guess I should not have been surprised to see the Saginaw County Commissioners
get on board with the legislators to remove the facility label from areas of the
floodplain that are subject to high water events. My understanding is the
facility identifies the boundaries Dow is responsible to clean up.
I first heard the word "facility" more than three years ago at meetings about
Dow's license. Where have all these politicians been?
The facility label is not the problem. High levels of dioxin are the problem,
and I would submit so are the politicians who have shown so little concern about
this public health matter.
