Lost opportunities
Editor, The News:
With another summer season fast approaching, we brought home our sailboat from
winter storage. We are undecided about putting it in far north this season --
supporting big oil being one reason.
But here's the problem. The Saginaw Bay is less than 30 minutes away, and I
would rather sell the boat than put it in the Saginaw sewer. Really.
The lost economic opportunities are shameful. Our leaders seem to be in denial
about what our watershed could be.
One recent example: A push to try to get Dow Chemical Co. to do something about
its dioxin contamination.
Politicians and the business community cry out, "What kind of message are we
sending to business by doing this?"
Is their message, "Come to Michigan, go ahead and trash our state. We won't do
anything about it."?
Tourism is our state's third largest economic resource, soon to move ahead of
manufacturing the way things are going.
Sadly, this area never will get my recreational dollars and for good reason.
I can't be the only one who feels this way.
